Who is Nano?

Nano Nagle was the foundress of the Presentation Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who taught at St. Gregory the Great Catholic School in San Antonio, Texas.

Nano was born in 1718 near the city of Cork, Ireland to a devout Catholic family. Because of the harsh Penal Laws, she received her education in Belgium and France. In her late twenties, she became devoted to caring for the poor, and to the Catholic education of young girls.

She returned to Cork in 1750 to begin these Ministries. Nano established several small schools in Cork and in the evenings, she walked the alleyways and quays of Cork, carrying her lantern, ministering to the poor. She became known as the The Lady of the Lantern.

Before her death in 1784, Nano had opened seven schools for poor children in Cork, founded an almshouse for poor women, and most notably, founded the Presentation Order, who continue her education and social inclusion work throughout the world.

By the 1830's, the Sisters began traveling to North America, establishing convents and schools in Canada and the United States.

In 1952, three of the Sisters arrived in San Antonio, Texas to establish a school at the new St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church.

The school opened in the Fall of 1955.

On October 31, 2013, Pope Francis declared Nano Nagle Venerable, the second step on her journey toward Sainthood.

Purpose of the Fund

Nano's Gift Fund is established for the sole purpose of providing tuition assistance to worthy students at St. Gregory the Great Catholic School,

who might not otherwise be able to attend and as identified by the school's selection committee.

Aspirations and Legacy

The founder of this fund has had a life-long commitment to a solid, Catholic education.

After she and her husband attended Catholic school in their youth and supported their children's Catholic education at St. Gregory and through high school, she wanted to help other families do the same.

By establishing this fund, she hopes and prays that it becomes an opportunity for others who share her commitment to a strong Catholic education, particularly those with close ties to St. Gregory the Great, such as alumni or parents and grandparents of current or former students. She hopes it becomes a legacy for all those who participate through their generous donations.
